Gluten and Dairy Free at the Brown Derby

Gluten and Dairy Free at the Brown Derby!

Caricatures line the walls as you enter this restaurant reminiscent of Hollywood’s Golden Age. While I’ve reviewed this sit-down restaurant before and it is one of the nicer Disney restaurants, I must say my impression of this restaurant has gone down quite a bit over my last few visits.

Brown Derby, Disney’s Hollywood Studios

On my first solo Disney trip, I had a rude chef and quite a negative experience, but the manager came over to apologize and ensured my food was cared for properly, so no harm nor foul. However, this last trip, my meal came out without the allergy stick. Obviously this was a red alarm and the waiter noticed it too. They remade the meal in the kitchen.

However, I’ve now had two non-allergy friendly meals delivered to my table by mistake, where if you don’t know Disney’s policy, you might have been in for quite the surprise.

Despite finding the chefs much less helpful than at other Disney restaurants, there are quite a few gluten and dairy free options. (You’ll just want to double check they were prepared correctly!) At the time of my visit the gluten and dairy free appetizers available included Togarashi Pumpkin Seed Crusted Ahi Tuna and Crispy Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes. The entrée options were a Noodle Bowl, or a modification of many of the other dishes (such as my steak).

And, while you can’t order the Cobb Salad appetizer, you can make it at home! They have copies of the recipe, and all you need to do is buy  gluten free Worcestershire Sauce. We did this once, and it was delicious!

Oh, and last but not least, we went to this restaurant on our way to The Osbourne Spectacle of Dancing Lights. As you may know, 2015 was most likely its last year. Or, at least it’s last year in its current location, Disney may find another location for it elsewhere in the parks- only time will tell.

The lights change colors in rhythm with different songs, and it is certainly a most wonderful sight to see!

I’m not saying I won’t go back, but this is a restaurant where you’ll have to be an advocate for yourself (as always!). If you’d like to read about a fantastic dining experience, check out last week’s post about Coral Reef in EPCOT.

Happy Travel Tuesday!

P.S: No system is foolproof, but I didn’t write this iffy review until I had two less than ideal dining experiences on November 2014 and 2015. However, I was able to enjoy a safe meal in the end both times.

  1. Sounds like you have to be constantly vigilant… I’m always so impressed by you, Kaila! Also, Disney twice?! I’m so jealous…I’ve been bitten by the travel bug again but my bank account keeps pulling me back to reality. Lol. Happy FF!

    1. Thanks, Indira! Yeah, I have to be super careful everywhere. I have a major travel bug right now. I’m on a working holiday visa in Australia. It’s only my second month, so much more work than vacation, but it’s definitely turning out to be the most affordable way to travel that I’ve tried so far! And, I get to learn a lot about Aussi culture. Happy FF! 😀
