Blogging Buddies!

Ask any blogger, and she probably has at least one blogging friend she would like to meet in person. Now, ask any celiac blogger, and she will tell you that she cannot WAIT to meet someone who is just “like” herself.

Okay, maybe, you aren’t identical, but you’re more similar than your local friends. With a rate of 1/133, it’s unlikely that your nearby friends have celiac disease too. Next, add on any extra dietary requirements, such as food allergies, IBS, etc., and the chance that you find someone just like you, is very slim.

Fortunately for me, it must have been fate that my road trip went by one of my favorite bloggers- Amber, from Eats & Exercise by Amber. She has celiac disease too! Plus, she has some similar, additional dietary requirements due to lactose intolerance and IBS. And, most importantly, she’s AWESOME.

We met up at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, but the motorcycles steal the show in this picture!

Thank you, Amber, for my GF care package!

Amber and I have been blogging friends for awhile, BUT we’ve never met in person. I just loved how our positive attitudes merged, and if you came by our table during dinner, you would have thought we were old pals.

Amber took me to a classic Rochester spot that I would never venture to on my own- Dinosaur Bar-B-Que! Now, all that’s left is to bring Amber down to Boston (or Colorado) to show her around. And, without further ado, here’s my review!

Gluten Free Menu

While Amber had already been to Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, this was my first experience, so I began by checking out their website. One good sign is that they have both a gluten free menu and an allergen info menu on their website. I had an idea of what options may be available to me before showing up.

When we arrived, I was glad that Amber had made a reservation because it was crowded! This is a popular, local spot in Rochester, so it’s a good (and possibly necessary) idea to make a reservation in advance. We reminded the hostess of our dietary requirements when we checked in, and then told our waiter when we sat down.

Unlike some other dining establishments I’m not certain if the hostess made him aware of our dietary needs, but he went and got his manager right away after we spoke with him.

Reading lots of labels!

Throughout our meal, I felt as though our dining needs were taken seriously. We spoke with the manager about the menu, he brought out a book of ingredients to review. Both of our meals were prepared and brought out separately. They even changed their gloves between preparing my meal and Amber’s meal because she ate something I couldn’t consume. Additionally, everyone seemed well-versed in the idea of cross-contamination or cross-contact.

For being a gluten-containing establishment, I believe they took all the right steps during our visit.

Next, loved the food! It’s a filling and hearty meal as opposed to the options when I eat out at some other places.

We’ll begin with my meal, the least hearty of all, but I loved the pork and the dressing on the cucumber & tomato salad!

Next is Amber’s meal, which is also gluten and dairy free. It features a wide array of options. Once you order a meal big enough, it’s pretty inexpensive to add on extra meat.

More Meat.

And, more meat.

We’ll end with my road trip buddy’s meal. Julie does not have celiac disease, but Dinosaur Bar-B-Que is a place she can enjoy too! (Note: Her meal contains gluten and dairy.)

As you can see, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que is not skimping out on their portion size. And, their prices are reasonable. You’ll find them on their website.

Finally, this review only speaks to my one experience at the Rochester location, I have not ventured to the other Dinosaur Bar-B-Que locations. I felt comfortable here knowing that Amber had worked with the same manager before. And, the best sign I can give you, is that neither of us were sick after our meal. 🙂

This experience was all part of my crazy road trip home! Here’s the general route I took. (It’s missing a few extra detours.) 🙂

In some parts of the country, dedicated gluten free options are limited. When I want a taste of local cuisine, another option I often take is to turn to local gluten free bloggers. So, if you’re ever in an area where I’ve lived (Boston, Colorado, etc.) or even visited, feel free to reach out!

I’m also sharing this experience with my friends over at Fiesta Friday! There are so many of you that I would like to meet as well. Have you ever met one of your own blogging friends in person?! I hope he/she is as terrific as Amber!

Until next time have a wonderful weekend, and thank you, Amber!

  1. AH, I LOVE THIS I AM SMILING FROM EAR TO EAR, BECAUSE IT’S SO WONDERFUL AND I LOVED MEETING YOU AND you are so spot on with your intro, it’s hard to meet someone like yourself, and when you do, the bond is unlike any other ❤ UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN ❤

    1. I LOVED MEETING YOU TOO! Thanks for being such a great host, and showing me around. It was such a great way to finish out our road trip too! I’ll see you in the blogosphere until we meet again! 🙂

    1. Thanks! And, yes, but I haven’t been in a few months. I’m going to work on that form of social media once my traveling craze calms down! Surprisingly, I have a hard time with social media from my phone! 🙂

      1. What’s your pinterest user name? I’m not sure we’re following each other. There’s a Kaila Stein following me, I don’t think that’s you.
