Gluten Free in NYC- Bakeries!

Last week I had the opportunity to spend a day in NYC with my dad. We started off our trip in a line filled with twenty-and-thirty-somethings waiting to sit on an infamous orange couch.

Hopefully, you recognized the couch from Friends. And yes, my dad was a trooper in the ridiculously long line. I was proud because all the adults over forty seemed to find a café to hide in until their parties made it to the front, but he waited with me the whole time.

Now, for the part of your trip that you actually want to hear about- the gluten free bakeries! NYC is a hub for all types of cuisine and 100% gluten free is no exception. (Come back on Friday to learn about all the restaurants I found.) I found seven 100% gluten free bakeries in the city, and during our day down there I made my way to three of them!

Babycakes NYC is 100% gluten free, soy free, vegan, and kosher. Plus, they label yeast!

I love Babycakes NYC. We found them in Disney World a little while back, and I’ve been a #1 fan of their doughnuts ever since. I was more than excited to attend the bakery in NYC. In fact, it was the main reason I wanted to go to NYC.

Babycakes NYC opened in 2005 with only two rules:

  1. Create a bakery free of harmful ingredients.
  2. Wear cute uniforms.

And, today, they’re goal remains the same.

Today, as then, we focus on the underserved— people with gluten, dairy, egg, and soy sensitivities, the health-minded, and, most importantly, allergic kids who are often unable to indulge. ~ Erin McKenna

So how does this allergy food pan out?! I love it! Here, was our sampling.

My Selection: Blueberry Powdered Doughnut, Coconut Heart, and Chocolate Cupcake

Mocha Frosting! Not my dad’s favorite frosting, but he liked the cupcake. (We recommend the mint.)

The doughnuts will remain my favorite part about Babycakes NYC, and the powdered blueberry doughnut was sublime. I love the texture on the inside, something I haven’t yet been able to master in my own kitchen. And, who doesn’t love a little bit of powdered sugar on top! Gluten Free in NYC- Babycakes NYCThe coconut heart was a new treat for me. Pretty much comprised completely of coconut, this is not a treat for those who like their coconut lightly. I loved the chocolate and coconut mixed together, but the pure coconut side was a little too strong for me. Definitely a delicious treat for coconut lovers though! And, maybe next time, I’ll ask for one dunked in chocolate. 🙂 Gluten Free in NYC- Babycakes NYC

Over the last nine years, Babycakes NYC has managed to stay true to its by mission as even the decor remains adorable.

And, of course, they maintain a cute atmosphere!

Overall, this is my personal favorite 100% gluten free bakery that I’ve been to so far. If you live in NYC, LA, or head to Disney World be sure to find some Babycakes NYC products yourself!

Jennifer’s Way Bakery

I love the atmosphere and mission of Jennifer’s Way Bakery. Her bakery standards are designed with celiacs in mind and the message that “food should be enjoyed, not feared” rings home to me.Gluten Free in NYC- Jennifer's Way

Gluten Free in NYC- Jennifer's WayJennifer’s Way Bakery is decked out with the cutest accessories and themes as well. It’s a bakery where I could sit and read all day long. Plus, I’d be constantly surprised by cute little knick-knacks and details.

While I knew I could call ahead to let them know my allergies, I completely forgot when we made our impromptu trip to NYC. Therefore, I didn’t try any of the gluten free goods, but my dad tried a snickerdoodle cookie and I brought a chocolate cookie home for my mom.

(Especially when one of the cookies had to travel outside of the state before being consumed.) I’ve also read some wonderful reviews of Jennifer’s Way Bakery’s goods, and I hear the breads are delicious.

Lastly, the best part about this 100% gluten free bakery (besides being safe for celiacs) is that all the  products are baked fresh each day! When we walked in at 10:30 AM, the bakery felt alive making for a truly whimsical experience.

Tu-Lu’s Gluten-Free Bakery

Gluten Free in NYC- LuluTu-Lu’s sold my mom’s favorite gluten free treat that I brought back to Boston. They have less allergy friendly options than Babycakes NYC or Jennifer’s Way NYC, but my mom loved the cinnamon crumble on top of one of their breads. Of course, this was also the only treat my family tried with dairy and eggs, which my mom says probably gave them a bit of a head start.

If you’re a celiac without other allergies, I definitely recommend checking out Tu-Lu’s. It’s walking distance from Jennifer’s Way! You can even check it out on my interactive map.

The Remaining Ones

Here are a list of some other 100% gluten free bakeries in NYC that I didn’t have time to check out, but I’d love to hear your reports!

I will never be a city girl. You’re much more likely to find me modeling in a cornfield. But, I had an amazing 24+ hours in NYC. And, I want to thank the city for being such an amazing host, as well as my dad for braving the city with me!

What gluten free places have you been to in NYC?! For more NYC highlights, be sure to check out the Gluten Free Globetrotter. Erin runs one of my favorite blogs, and she’s based out of NYC.

Hope you’re having a great week so far!!

P.S: Come back this Friday to learn about some gluten free restaurants in NYC!

  1. I LOVE BABYCAKES SO MUCH! My first experience was in Downtown Disney for my College Senior Cruise, and I WENT HOG WILD I was so excited, I legit stuffed my face and brought more for the next two days worth, i loved their corn muffins!

    1. ME TOO! I’m so glad they still have Babycakes in the park after the Downtown Disney location closed. I’ve never had their corn muffins! (I think they might use tapioca starch.) AND, when I was writing this post, I realized that Babycakes ships too, so maybe for a special occasion we could get some doughnuts without having to brave the city. 🙂

      1. That is dangerous that you told me they ship, I’ll order 23094239847 corn muffins and freeze them!
